World Diabetes Day

November 14 is World Diabetes Day – a day to draw attention to the grave threat that diabetes poses throughout the world. Shame on us in the United States for not worrying enough about this threat already. The numbers are staggering. In 2002, diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death in America. And doctors say that this figure is probably vastly under-reported. Twenty three million people – that’s the same number of people that voted last week in the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida and Indiana combined – already have diabetes. And just less than half the total number of people who voted in America - 57 million - are walking around with pre-diabetes, a ticking time bomb that could lead to diabetes, which can cause heart attacks, stroke, blindness and death. In fact it is a condition that is twice as likely to kill you as any other.
